Join the educators at the Rhode Island Museum of Science and Art for a five week series!
Ages 6-16. There will be differentiated instruction for younger and older kids, as appropriate. Cost: $50 Five weeks, two hours each. One hour museum exploration, then a one hour workshop. This is a drop off program; parents do not stay. Sign up by December 20. Space is limited.d. January 3rd, 2020 Rube Goldberg Machines Explore the connection between potential and kinetic energy by using tubes, tape and other household materials to create creative marble “roller coasters”. February 14th, 2020 Electric Dough Explore the basics of electricity and how it travels in a circuit. Using LED lights, PlayDoh and other common conductive and insulating materials, create sculptures that glow. March 13th, 2020 Alexander Calder - Mobiles & Stabiles Design and create your own kinetic, colorful, and balanced mobiles out of wood, wire and colored shapes that students form themselves. Use 2D materials – colorful cardstock - to create 3D works of art and engineering. April 10, 2020 Stomp Rockets/Space Origami Explore how a store bought stomp rocket works by taking one apart. Use what you have learned to build your own, creatively, using alternate materials. Those with more dexterity can learn the art of folding paper, which has inspired designs for NASA – from satellite solar panels to a “starshade” to other types of hardware. Make “solar panels” on a mock-up satellite fit into the “rocket” designed to bring it into orbit, as well as other origami. May 8th, 2020 Andy Goldsworthy/ Art in Nature Use natural materials to construct Goldsworthy inspired sculptures. Weather permitting, this class will be held outdoors. Weather not permitting, it can be held indoors. |
