Thursday, November 29th 7:30pm
Put on your pajamas, sit back and join us on our ENRICHri Facebook page!

This workshop gives an overview of the college and university system in America. It begins with a discussion on what is learned in and gained by attending a postsecondary institution. There is significant discussion of college control (public vs private) and college type (university, liberal arts, specialty, community). Students and parents are asked to think about the best fit for learning style and long term goals. The session concludes with a discussion of how to look for quality and avoid popular ranking traps. Group of colleges like the Colleges the Change Lives (CTCL), Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Alternative Colleges, and Members of the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) are featured.

Led by Laura Kazan and the founder of College Seekers, a community based organization with a mission to help students find colleges based on personal fit and finances. Laura holds a post graduate certificate in College Admission Counseling from the University of California, Riverside, and has over 20 years of experience in education.

Laura started teaching English as a foreign language in 1996 and developed the youth and teen programs for the English Centre in Istanbul, Turkey. Upon her return to the United States, she branched into technology and math education then began working on her PhD in education with a specialization in higher education administration and research. Her research focused on access to postsecondary education and social networks. Before turning to college counseling, she was a university institutional researcher where she worked directly with admissions, financial aid, and accreditation.

The mission of College Seekers is to improve access to higher education to underserved populations focusing on non traditional learners, especially those who homeschool, use public independent study, attend non traditional schools, or who have learning differences. Laura hopes to expand opportunities by improving community connections, introducing alternatives to traditional colleges, and providing support to families and students as they begin and travel through high school.
