Gilbert Stuart Birthplace and Museum

Visit the birthplace of famous portrait artist Gilbert Stuart, who painted over 1,000 portraits but is best known today for painting the image of George Washington that appears on the $1 bill. Located on 23 acres, the Gilbert Stuart Birthplace and Museum contains the authentically restored and furnished 1750 home and snuff mill where Gilbert Stuart was born. The Museum has the working Stuart snuff mill, an operating gristmill, fish ladder, millpond, nature trails, and colonial herb garden. Our handicapped accessible art gallery contains original works by Stuart, his daughter Jane Stuart, and changing exhibitions of notable Rhode Island Masters.
Admission includes access to grounds, nature trails, gallery exhibition, the Studio, and guided tour of the historic buildings. Picnic area outside is available in good weather. (No food or drink inside of museum buildings) Please allow 45 - 60 minutes for the guided tour, plus additional time for enjoyment of gallery, exhibits, grounds/trails.
