Field Trips
Providence Preservation Society
24 Meeting Street Providence, RI 02903
Event Registration Opens 3/1/25 @8pm
"RI history comes alive as the Providence Preservation Society brings us on a walking tour covering 400 years of history. Walking Tour: Providence Stories: 400 Years in Four Blocks This walk will reflect on the evolution of one square block in Providence's College Hill, covering the period of European settlement in the 1630s along the Providence River through the present, with special attention to histories of enslavement and industry, asking questions about why certain places get preserved while others are erased, and how powerful institutions literally change the shape of the city over time. This walk is led by Marisa Angell Brown, Executive Director of Providence Preservation Society. Brown has a PhD in the History of Art and Architecture from Yale University and has taught courses on preservation, public history and community-engaged creative practice at Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design and College Unbound. The walking part of the tour is about an hour, stay for questions afterwards! Parking There is street parking but it can be a little more difficult than other parts of the East Side -- it's likely to get a spot within a 10-min walk but not guaranteed to find one within a few minutes' walk. Best bet is North Main Street at metered parking, Benefit Street, Meeting Street or Congdon Street. Appropriate for all ages. Fully wheelchair and stroller accessible. Adult ticket is needed. This is NOT a drop off event. Adults must be present." |
