Estuary Adventures at Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge
Charlestown, RI
The Frosty Drew Nature Center's "outdoor classroom" is the Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge, Charlestown, RI. Students explore the shore of a coastal salt pond, Ninigret Pond, and the shrublands that surround the pond. Using a 40-foot seine net, our naturalists gather specimens from the salt pond and help students to transfer them to a beach aquarium. Students examine the specimens and discuss adaptations, predator/prey relationships, and survival strategies. Through exploring the unique coastal shrublands surrounding the salt pond, students learn about the shrubland's importance to the salt pond ecosystem.

Schedule includes 15 minute walk to salt pond, 60 minutes siening, 60 minutes of beach exploration, wrap up and 15 minute walk back.
Feel free to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy at the Nature Center. You must carry out anything you bring in; no trash collection is available.
