Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation
6565 Shun Pike
Johnston, RI
This two-part service learning opportunity is aimed at students in grades 6-12. Space is limited.

Currently, 1 in 9 households in Rhode Island is experiencing food insecurity, while 100,000 tons of food is buried in Rhode Island's Central landfill every year. This program puts the pieces together, with a discussion of preventing food waste and the negative environmental impact of waste, plus a tour of RI's central waste facility.

April 21, 11am - 12pm: Food Waste Recovery
This hour-long presentation at RIRRC discusses how food waste occurs, the impact of wasted food, and simple tools that have been shown to be effective in reducing household food waste. From an impact standpoint, preventing household food waste has the double benefit of decreasing the amount of food waste going to the landfill (where it produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas) as well as saving households’ money by preventing edible food from going to waste.

May 11, 11:30am-1pm: Tour of RIRRC
Visitors will take a driving tour of the Rhode Island's waste facilities. We will all board a bus that will take us around the facility, then see a presentation about their recycling program.

Parking is very limited. Please carpool if possible.
RIRRC is located off of Rte 295, Exit 7. Its name is right on the exit. Once you exit, travel about 1 mile down Shun Pike, on the right. There is a guard station at the entrance.
Once you enter, take a right, following the bright yellow sign that says ALL TOURS for parking and next steps.

*To attend both parts of this field trip, select " Food waste Presentation + RIRRC Bus Tour". To attend the presentation only, select "Food Waste Presentation". Space is limited on the bus, but we can accomodate more people in the presentation.
