New England Living History & Archaeology at URI Environmental Education Center
Monday, April 20 GPS Address: 9 Wheatley Road, West Greenwich, RI Spend a day at the Environment Education Center, URI's unique 2,300-acre wilderness area is devoted to environmental education, conservation and research. Age 6+. Intended for grades 1-6. Kids will be in 2 groups, differentiated by age. Price $42. Includes lunch. Parents may drop off or stay. Cost for parents who stay: $25. Morning Program: Living History Experience history while traveling through a rural Rhode Island community in the 1830s. Along the way you will meet a variety of characters such as a farmer, housewife, schoolteacher, child, and tavern keeper. Concepts include colonial history, New England agricultural community, and early American way of life. This program brings the past alive through an historical reenactment, gives kids the opportunity to observe different characters and learn more about their lives and roles within the community, and develop an understanding and appreciation for life in a 19th century rural Rhode Island community. Afternoon Program: Archaeology Learn the basic principles of archaeology through hands-on discovery as students participate in the excavation of a historic site on campus. Concepts include New England history, feature, artifact, and culture. Students will excavate a site: dig in quadrants, sift for artifacts, wash, catalogue and discuss the findings. |

All members are invited to display! Please submit hanging items matted or framed. Neither need to be expensive, simply using a larger piece of paper as a frame is fine. ALL ART SHOULD BE MARKED on back or bottom with artist's full name and age. Y All members are allowed to bring up to 4 pieces of art. Cost is free. And art will be on display all through April.
