What was life like during the Civil War? If you were a soldier, how did you spend your day? How did troops communicate? These hands-on programs bring Civil War history to life. We will have three stations:
Hospital Corps & Medical Treatment State of Medicine at the start of the War, Medical Advancements, Treatment of the Wounded, Sanitary Commission - Improving a Soldier's Life Students learn from primary accounts, and work in teams to build a stretcher. Signal Corp & Communications Communication & Information Challenges, Codes & Cyphers, Communication Technology Students discover how difficult it was to communicate with 1860s technology when they learn signal wig wag and codes and ciphers. Engineering Corp The magnitude of the war, Managing and moving distances (people and animals), the effects of the War, Topography and map making, Logistics. Students work in teams to construct a scale model of a pontoon bridge that was used to move armies across rivers. Age: recommended for ages 8+ Cost: $10 per student Feel free to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy on the grounds of Roseland Cottage, a historic mansion built in 1846. Register by April 20. |
