1420 Broad St 3rd floor Central Falls, RI 02863
Mondays for 6 weeks starting Mar 2, 2026 - 3/9, 3/16, 3/23, 3/30, 4/6
1pm-2pm This class is for 9-12 year olds only. Please ensure they can handle a classroom setting. A hands‑on, interdisciplinary science workshop that lets kids explore the natural world through a variety of exciting experiments. From studying tiny biological structures to creating art and tasty treats, each activity blends curiosity‑driven discovery with simple, safe materials, giving participants a broad taste of chemistry, biology, physics, and creative science. Topics Covered 1: Fingerprints: Fingerprints have been used to solve crime for more than 100 years. Students will learn what makes them unique, the different types of fingerprints, how to dust for and take fingerprints from others. 2: Fibers and Chromatography: Fibers all have unique structures and colors, and using a simple microscope, you can learn to identify what different fibers look like. Speaking of colors, ink is not made of a single color, and there are ways to identify what pen was used to write a note. Students will learn a bit about both forensic techniques. 3. DNA-Simple Genetics and Extraction: this class will focus on that magic molecule, DNA. Students will learn about DNA, simple genetics and even extract DNA from fruit. 4. The Science of Sight: the “eyes” have it and we are going to learn about it in this class (NOTE: this class will include the dissection of a sheep eye) 5. The Science in the Art: Frescoes: Frescoes are one of the oldest forms of painted art. In this program, students will learn about the long history of fresco painting and even create one themselves 6. Simple Molecular Gastronomy: cooking is more than recipes! In this class, kids will make a simple edible project, learning the science behind the experience. |

2pm-3pm This class is for 7-8 year olds only. Please ensure they can handle a classroom setting. A hands‑on science workshop where kids explore everyday phenomena through fun experiments—from creating “lava lamps” that illustrate density to building bridges with popsicle sticks. Each activity blends curiosity‑driven discovery with simple, safe materials, giving children a taste of chemistry, physics, biology, and culinary science. Topics Covered 1. Density: making non-electrical lava lamps: Children will learn a bit about what density is, and make a simple “lava lamp” (children will need to bring a 1 liter plastic bottle-label removed) 2. How Sugar Makes Stars: Can sugar make a star? It can if you know how! Kids will learn about how solutions, crystals and set up to make sugar stars 3. Owl Pellets: Winter is when owls are active, calling and mating. Kids will get to look at what owl eat by examining a pellet. 4. Snow Science: learn a bit about the science of snow (and ice) 5. Bridge the Gap: using just their creativity, kids will figure out the strongest way to make a bridge from popsicle sticks 6. Simple Molecular Gastronomy: cooking is more than recipes! In this class, kids will make a simple edible project, learning the science behind the experience. |
