Introduction to Homeschooling: A Workshop for Parents New to Homeschooling or Interested in Homeschooling
The topics that will be discussed include: Homeschooling in Rhode Island: state laws, district policies and what to submit 101 Reasons Families Choose to Homeschool Curriculum Planning: Resources, Learning Styles, Homeschooling Methods, A Typical Homeschool Day The āSā word : socialization EnrichRI volunteers with many years of homeschooling experience will present this program that covers the basics of homeschooling. URI Environmental Education Center

Spend a day an the Environment Education Center, URI's unique 2,300-acre wilderness area is devoted to environmental education, conservation and research. Over 40,000 acres of state parks and forests surround the Campus, making this one of the largest preserved regions in southern New England. It is home to a great diversity of mammals, birds, wildflowers and trees and serves as an outdoor school for more than 10,000 students each year..
Our group will work on three projects: Outdoor Skills: Learn basic outdoor wilderness skills that can be applied to a day hike or an overnight trip. Concepts include fire building and safety, shelter building, leave-no-trace, preparation, planning, and wilderness. Orienteering: Learn to use a map and compass to pinpoint your location and find your way through the forest. Concepts include topographic, magnetic north, map reading skills, true north, and navigation. Challenge Course: Continue developing group-building skills at a challenge course, including permanent cooperative elements nestled in the forest. Concepts include teamwork, trust, focus, listening skills, and communication. Programs are conducted by the Environmental Education Center's field teachers, college graduates trained and experienced in outdoor teaching methods.. Audience: Ages 9+ (firm) to teen Parents may drop off or stay. Fee: $42 per student. Breakfast and lunch is included. $19 for parents who stay Sign up by August 31. |
