Field Trips
Buck Hill Management Area
Burrillville, RI
Enjoy a walking tour of a Blackstone Valley forest with a naturalist who is scouting out a route for us with a habitat biologist.
Buck Hill Management area is approximately 2000 acres, primarily forest. The Department of Fish and Wildlife maintains a wildlife marsh which serves to attract waterfowl, furbearers such as muskrat, and other wetland dependent birds. RIDEM occasionally performs clear cuts across the management areas to encourage early successional habitat growth. September is a nice time to search for migrating birds, which use the shrubs and small trees that are regenerating. It's a great opportunity to learn about forest regeneration and the importance of each stage for wildlife. Cutting trees down can actually benefit wildlife, when done strategically. Audience: Tweens and Teens. All ages welcome to join. Cost: free Anticipate walking through trails - bring sturdy shoes and bug spray. |
