Step through time into the colonial period at the John Brown House Museum and learn about life in 18th-century Providence. This program, run by the Rhode Island Historical Society, uses stations inside the house to offer interactive and experiential learning with sensory objects, discussion, and object analysis.

The John Brown House was the first mansion build in Providence. It was visited by 3 Presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and John Quincy Adams. John Quincy Adams wrote in his diary that this house was “the most magnificent and elegant private mansion that I have ever seen on this continent.” John Brown was a slave trader and privateer. He led the Gaspee Affair in 1772, the looting and burning of a ship sent by King George to enforce colonial rule. John Brown's family donated the land that Brown University sits upon.

This 1 hour tour is best for kids age 3rd-6th grade.

Knowledgeable staff that are able to discuss a variety of historical subjects including Rhode Island’s special role in the Revolution and participation in slavery and the slave trade.

COVID policy: All visitors age 3 and up must wear a mask during this in-person tour.
Parking: there is a lot at the corner of Benefit and Charlesfield Street. Cars may park anywhere in the dirt lot. Please do not park on the lawn. There is also free street parking within a few blocks of the house.

Our fun annual tradition! Exchange cards with other kids by mail.

Deadline to sign up is Friday, January 28th.

We will compile names in groups for a card exchange.
You will get, via email, the names and addresses of those in your group on Monday, January 31th.
There will be 20 or fewer kids in each group.
You will agree to send cards to the other kids in your group no later than Monday, February 7th.
Valentine's Day is Monday, February 14.
Cards can be bought or homemade.

Please register here, and in the 'members attending' field fill in the names of your child(ren) who are participating and the address you want cards mailed to.

If you want your kids to receive cards together, register once. If you want each child to send and receive their own cards, please register each child separately.
