Where: Botanical Gardens Roger Williams Park
Providence, RI
Who: aimed at grades K - 3
What:
Learning Landscape is led by URI Outreach. There will be stations that we will go through in groups.
Students use their senses to explore the plants and wildlife that inhabit southern New England. Trained URI Master Gardener and student educators present topics such as ecosystems and adaptations, seed diversity, native mammals and birds, worms and decomposers, the water cycle and pollution prevention and more in a fun and age-appropriate format.
Environmental education stations include:
NATIVE BIRDS
Take a closer look at our feathered friends: what makes birds special? What does a robin use to build its nest? How do differences in beaks, feet and other adaptations help them to survive?
INSECTS
Explore the differences between insects and arachnids. Learn about pollinators and pests and how Integrated Pest Management can help keep our environment safe.
WORM COMPOSTING
View a natural recycling system at work: learn about composting and the important role that wiggly invertebrates play in the food chain.
NATIVE MAMMALS
Examine native RI wildlife through skulls, teeth and pelts. What can animal adaptations tell you about predator-prey relationships? Study antlers and other clues that animals leave behind.
ECOSYSTEMS AND ADAPTATIONS
A taste of the tropics in Rhode Island: discover plants from deserts to the tropics, to a carnivorous bog. Discover adaptations that help plants to thrive in regions with extremes in temperature or precipitation.
SEEDS AND PLANTS
Investigate the diverse world of plants and then make plant pots from reusable materials to bring home. Learn what seeds and plants need in order to grow and thrive.
Cost: $11 per students (adults and siblings ages 4 and under are free but must be registered for a headcount)
