What: Primitive Painting

When: Thursday, January 7th 12:00 - 2:00

Where:
ENRICHri Community Center
1395 Nooseneck Hill Road, Coventry

Who: ages 11 and up

What:
In this class we we are going to start from the very beginning, by learning about how ancient
people made their art materials from natural elements. We will look at examples of cave
paintings made by people thousands of years ago in different parts of the world, and we will
learn a little bit about different kids of rocks and how they were formed. Then we will crush up
some rocks that we have gathered and make our own paint, experimenting with different
mediums and binders to make watercolors and oil based paint, and notice the different working
qualities of each kind. Finally, we will use the paint we made to make our own cave style
painting on a large flat rock to take home.

Materials Provided:
• protective eyewear
• mortar and pestle
• bag for pounding rocks into small pieces
• beeswax
• honey
• linseed oil
You should bring:
• variety of rocks: try to find a flat, light colored one for painting on. try to find softer, crumbly
rocks to grind into pigment. test rocks by scraping them against other rocks - if you can draw
with them they will probably grind up nicely into a pigment. I had good luck finding rocks near
the beach.
