Slater Mill Tour & Hands-On Workshops
Friday, October 18, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Visit Slater Mill, a historic textile mill in Pawtucket.  A museum interpreter will lead our group through three buildings:

the 1758 Sylvanus Brown House – a rare survivor of the 18 th century artisan landscape in the Pawtucket, and site of Samuel Slater’s first stay in the village in 1789

the 1810 Wilkinson Machine Shop & Waterwheel Bay – where waterpower is demonstrated in David Wilkinson’s own period mill

the 1793 Old Slater Mill – the first successful cotton-spinning factory in America.

We will also engage in two hands-on workshops: the Apprentice Alcove in Wilkinson, where hand-powered machinery is used to create wood bobbins,  and Trad Arts Studio in Slater, where they work with natural fibers and learn about the pre-Industrial fiber-to-yarn process. The visit also includes the “Hidden in the Blackstone” film and a map-based geography lesson.
