Description

Nicholas Farm Management Area-  a walk with RIDEM
Wednesday, September 19, 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Nicholas Road, Coventry RI

Get to know a hidden gem in Coventry.   Our guide, Mary Grande with RIDEM (the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management), will take  us on an easy, under 2 mile walk through the property to talk about the habitat and wildlife of Nicholas Farm.  This area is managed by controlled burn -  Mary says " I was just out at Nicholas Farm, and the burn area looks AMAZING. It is incredible how much has grown over the course of just one summer! "

Be aware that the soil in this walk is fairly sandy --- bring sturdy shoes.  A hat and water are also recommended.

The walk is fairly out in the open (not into the woods).  The entire experience, walking and learning about the management area, will take approximately 2 hours.

There ground bees are present in the area.  They have not present a problem for hikers and RIDEM employees, but, it's important for people with allergies to be aware.

Please register by September 14.
Register children & adults who will be on the walk.  Space is limited.

Driving Directions
Nicholas Farm can be a little tricky to find if you have never visited! There will be signs for the event, but there are also some maps below. The best address to use on your GPS is 247 Nicholas Road, Coventry. This is the last house on your left hand side that you will see before entering the management area.

Take 95 North or South (depending on your starting point!) and take Exit 5B towards Exeter.
Merge onto Rte 102 North.
At the new rotary, take a left onto Rte 117, heading West. Continue down 117, bearing left to stay on Hopkins Hollow Road. You will pass the Greene Public Library.
Take a left onto Lewis Farm Road (dirt road), and then another left onto Nicholas Road.
You will pass an open sand bank area on your left, and will cross over the Roaring Brook.
After you cross the brook, you will see a dirt driveway on your right, with a small parking area (yellow star on the map)
You have arrived at Nicholas Farm Management Area!
