RI Model Legislature Informational Meeting
Tuesday, June 6, 12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Held at the ENRICHri Community Center
Established in 1947, Rhode Island Model Legislature is the oldest model government program for high school students in the United States. This civics program takes students through the entire legislative process at the state level. Students research and write their own legislation, which goes through a committee process; students learn parliamentary procedure to interact and debate in committee. The experience culminates with Liberal and Conservative party caucuses, a Committee Day, and Rhode Island Model Legislature, held each March in the General Assembly's chambers at the Rhode Island State House.
Your 9th – 12th grader is invited to join the homeschoolers that will be participating in the 2017/18 Model Legislature. We are welcoming those from RI as well as from nearby MA and CT. This program will be led by the State Co-Coordinator, Louise Oliveria, who has been involved in the RI Model Legislature for over 30 years.
There will be a FREE informational meeting for parents and teens on Tuesday, June 6th 12:30 – 1:30 at the ENRICHri Community Center, 1395 Nooseneck Hill Rd, Coventry, RI 02816. \
If you decide that this program is right for your teen, registration will be open from June 7th to June 9th. The cost, per teen, is $50 ENRICHri members/$60 non-members.
The first meeting, for teens only, is Tuesday, June 20th, 12:00 – 1:00. They will have some items to work on over the summer and then monthly meetings (the 4th Tuesday each month 12 – 1) will be held September – March. We expect all meetings to be held at the ENRICHri Community Center but there may be a change in venue at some point. Those who take on leadership roles will have additional meetings to be held at CCRI in Warwick.
