RIDEM Wildlife Outreach Program: Beaver Exploration
Friday, March 31, 10am-12:30pm Postponed due to weather. New date: Monday, April 17th.
Location:
If anyone is in need of a restroom before or after the program, they can stop by the main office on the way down to the dirt parking lot. The main office has a sign out front and an American flag. There are lots of buildings over here, don't want anyone getting confused.
Great Swamp Wildlife Management Area (277 Great Neck Rd., West Kingston 02892). Round trip, participants can expect to walk under 5 miles in total. The beavers have been active at this site, so we should see some good stuff.
There is a parking lot with plenty of space at the gate to the main trail. The address above is for the field headquarters. The parking lot is past the office building. You just have to keep driving straight until you hit a large dirt lot, which is a dead end.

Are you interested in learning about Rhode Island’s very own ecosystem engineers? If so, the RIDEM Division of Fish & Wildlife invites you on an outdoor exploration to discover more about beavers! Students of all ages are invited to join the search for beaver browse, structures, and evidence of other wildlife that benefit from these industrious creatures. We will be discussing ecological concepts such as niches, wetlands, and habitats.
Things to bring:
1) Binoculars – We will be able to provide binoculars, but feel free to bring your own.We may need them to spot the beavers, or to take a look at the birds that use beaver-created habitat.
2) Weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes – We will be on our feet, so comfortable, sturdy shoes are a must. We want everyone to be comfortable and dressed for the weather, and recommend checking the temperature forecast prior to leaving the house. 3) Enthusiasm and questions!
