This is a 6 week hands-on experience with scientific tools and specimens that will take place in the fully equipped River Classroom center located on the third floor of the Blackstone Valley building right next to the beautiful Blackstone River.
Parents, you have the option to drop off your child or stay. Please ensure your child can handle a drop off situation and maintain a positive learning environment for the other participants if you choose to do so.
The students will get hands-on experience with scientific tools and specimens, as well as a better understanding of our changing climate and how we measure it.
Topics:
Discuss forest ecology and the patterns of wildlife and forest structure
How foresters manage forests for endangered species, forest health, and production
How to measure a tree
What does a forester do
How forests have changed since the Industrial Revolution
Students could learn how to measure a tree using real forestry tools. Through this, they could learn how to sample an area and decide what kind of management approach should be taken, how to set up a sample, how to eliminate bias in a sample, how many board feet are in the plot.
