9:45 Classes
Healing Herbs - class starts at 9:30 $45 ($30 class, $15 supplies) 60 minutes Teachers - Lia Prentiss, Lee Cowan
Lia and Lee are bringing this popular class back! We are surrounded by plants that can be wonderful allies to our well-being. Join us as we get to know one or two plants a week and work together to prepare them for use in teas, tinctures, salves, spritzers, or food! Students will be able to bring home their own creations as well as recipes and instructions for making them in the future. This is a very hands on class-- touching, tasting, smelling, mixing, making-- coupled with quiet time at the table for listening and drawing. Our aim is to foster a sense of connection and respect for our plant friends as well as explore natural ways to nurture our own well-being. As always, our class is open to new and returning students. Lia and Lee grow their own plants and herbs and love sharing their knowledge of alternative uses for a wide variety of botanical species! We are happy to have them with us!

Jr. Professors 60min class $30 Teacher: Amanda Campbell
Students will choose a new topic that interests them, do the research at home and then during the 5 remaining classes have at least 2 different times that they will be the ‘professor’ and teach the class about their topic! This class is not about public speaking, there will NOT be any critique of their presentation skills. It will be a supportive and positive experience for all. It is an opportunity for kids to get excited about a new question, research it, and share their findings. You know the old adage, “You don’t start learning until you teach”.
There are 4 main learning goals for this class:
1. Learn how to craft a good research question.
2. Have an opportunity to independently do research and learn about a new topic that they are really curious about.
3. Have experience sharing what they have learned with others.
4. Be a supportive and positive teammate.
Presentations will be 10 mins or less.
During the first class students will choose their topics or a single topic and break it into sections. As a group, students will work together to help each other to take their curiosity and craft it into a strong question to go home and find the answer to. We will also discuss different ways to look for the answers to their questions. Then during the 5 remaining classes students will be presenting their learning to each other. The number of presentations done will depend on the number of students in the class. Students should come to the first class with a few ideas that they are curious about. Amanda is a returning Co-op teacher and has led this class during our Fall session. She also serves on our Co-op Committee as one of our Cooperative Volunteer Coordinators!

Old Master Oil Painting 90min class $50 ($15 supply fee) Teachers: Rachel Laprise & Mikayla Gilpin-Ouellette
Step back in time and imagine yourself as an apprentice to a master painter! This session we will be creating an oil painting in the luminous classical realistic style of the Old Masters, think Rembrandt or Da Vinci. Oil painting is a slow process and we will be working on the same painting for the entire 6 weeks. (Da Vinci spent years creating the Mona Lisa!). We will begin with techniques for painting preparation, toning and preparing our canvas as well as drawing with graphite or charcoal. We will then transfer our work onto the canvas board and begin underpainting techniques. This process will continue as students build layers of opaque paint and thin glazes in oil on canvas to result in a monochromatic underpainting which will be ready to start color during the next session. In addition to the supply fee listed above, students will be required to purchase many of their own supplies before class starts (including sketching pencils, paintbrushes, oil paints, palette with knife set, and an easel - which could be an additional cost of $150). You may have some of these products already and a specific detailed list will be emailed to each parent prior to the first class. RETURNING students are welcomed back to continue their work from the previous session. In addition to the supply fee listed above, they may be required to purchase additional paint colors, etc. up to $40.
